Principal's Welcome
Welcome to the Chilmark School, a close-knit elementary school community rooted in strong relationships among students, staff, families, and the wider island community. Chilmark is part of the Up Island Regional School district which encompasses the towns of Chilmark, Aquinnah, and West Tisbury. Our multiage classroom structure in grades 1 through 4 provided enhanced opportunities for cooperation and leadership skills as older students take on mentoring roles and younger students learn by observing their peers. This is mirrored in the many multi-age experiences that are part of our such as reading buddies and whole-school recess.
We hold high academic standards aligned with the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks while also embracing rich, meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Our students engage in robust project-based learning that draws on the unique resources of our island and invites them to explore the wider world beyond it. Through interdisciplinary projects and authentic experiences, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and leadership skills.
Chilmark School sits on the Beetlebung campus in the center of Chilmark. We are fortunate to share our grounds with the Chilmark Public Library and the Chilmark Community Center, both of which play an integral role in our students’ experience. These spaces function as our school library and gym on particular days and allow us to offer instrumental music lessons in a quiet space. We have an ongoing special relationship with our neighbor, the Chilmark Preschool.
The Chilmark Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an active and valued partner in our work. We are so grateful to the PTO for supporting enrichment programs and school traditions as well as our Outing Program. The PTO is a great way to get involved in your child’s school experience and connect with other Chilmark families.
I encourage you to reach out to me with any questions and look forward to seeing you at school.
